We review – Cinderella

Cinderella starring Brian Conley, Gok Wan and Lauren Hall

“A feel-good fairy tale panto” – Donna Schwartz from Bradley Stoke reviews Cinderella at the Bristol Hippodome.

If you’re looking for humour, magic, sparkle and family entertainment, then look no further this Christmas than the Bristol Hippodrome.

This year’s seasonal spectacular is Cinderella and it outstripped any other pantomime we’ve seen previously.

From the very start the star of the show, Brian Conley, kept the crowd in creases of laughter with wit and wonder at every opportunity. This was an evening of belly laughs for both adults and children alike.

I went along with my three kids, Emily, 18, Zachary, 15 and Preston, 12, and I didn’t see the smiles drop from their faces once throughout the performance.

The script and humour was fantastic, but Conley did well to add in a touch of his own stand up magic when he was heckled from the crowd – causing an even greater roar of laughter as he weaved a comeback into his lines.

I asked the kids what they loved most about the panto and they all agreed it was the magical moment that Cinderella travelled to the ball. The props were just amazing, and included life-size cut out horses that looked almost real from the stalls.

Cinderella waved at the children in the audience, much to their delight, giving the show a true fairy tale feel.

I personally loved the way the panto included references for Bristol, with comments about different places around the city, such as Clifton. But the true Brizzle Belles had to be the Ugly Sisters, who roared ‘alright me babbers’, causing fits of laughter.

The panto was based on Cinderella, but more of a loose storyline to the original, as this felt more like a comedy show than a children’s story. Not that I’m complaining, as we all thought it was hilarious and perfect Christmas entertainment for the whole family.

Gok Wan and Lauren Hall

Gok Wan starred as the Fairy Godmother, adding his own designer sparkle to the show.

The costumes wouldn’t have been out of place in a Disney movie and were just beautiful, giving the pantomime a real showstopper feeling.

As with all good pantos there was plenty of audience participation, even asking the kids what they’d like for Christmas.

This is without doubt one of the best pantomimes we’ve seen at Bristol Hippodrome – next year’s show is going to have to work hard to top Cinderella!

Cinderella is showing until Sunday, January 6.
