Step outside for Bristol Walk Fest

We explore the great outdoors this month with a preview of Bristol Walk Fest…

We all know walking is good for us and in fact, the NHS says its ideal for keeping active, losing weight and staying healthy. Walking for as little as 10 minutes a day can make a difference to wellbeing and it’s good for mental health too.

So it’s great that Bristol Walk Fest is going on for the whole of May. This city-wide festival celebrates the joys of urban walking and explores areas of Bristol you may not know.

Focus on North Bristol

Most of the events are just outside of our patch but quite a few are nearby and are not just ordinary walking. If you head to Stoke Gifford on Wednesday 16thMay, you can have a go at Walking Football – perfect if you love the sport but aren’t quite up to the full speed game anymore. If netball is more your thing, try Walking Netball at Lawrence Weston Youth Centre on Wednesday 23rdMay.

Happy mature couple walkingIf you love wildlife, then there’s a walk around Ellen’s Wood in Almondsbury on Friday 18thMay will be perfect.

Hear the story of Princess Caraboo, how she was shipwrecked in the Severn Estuary and how it was turned into a film.

There’s also an evening ramble around Blaise Castle Estate led by Wendy Britton from Bristol Ramblers on Thursday 10thMay from 6pm where she’ll be sharing her knowledge of the history of the estate.

What else is on?

Bristol Walk Fest is a month long festival with multiple events on every day so there are lots to choose from but we’ve picked some highlights worth making a special trip for.

Brunel Harbourside Walk on Saturday 12thMay – starting from the SS Great Britain, the walk will take a tour of some of Brunel’s projects and you’ll find out more about the man himself.

The Urban Food Trail on Thursday 17thMay will visit 14 gardens around the city that are successfully growing food, from urban allotments to mini orchards.
